Gin tours, or distillery tours, are not something you would not have come across ten years ago in Australia. From 2014 to 2019, the number of gin distilleries in Australia grew from around 20 to 170. Nowadays, there are more than 300, and the “gin boom” does not look like it will end soon. Flavoured gin, in particular, is still exploding within Australia and now represents over $100 million in annual sales.
There are no rules for gin – as long as it contains more juniper than anything else and has more than 37.5% alcohol, you can add just about anything else you want. Distillers in Margaret River use local ingredients to create original flavours, and the crowds are flocking to check them out.
What are my Options for Distillery Tours?
If you’re visiting the Margaret River region and looking to take part in gin tours/distillery tours, you have a few options. Most groups decide to stop off at one distillery and a selection of wineries and breweries. However, if you’re “gin mad,” there are now enough options within the region to fill a full day’s itinerary.
Best Distilleries in Margaret River for Gin Tours
Here are some of the best venues, in our opinion, to visit on your gin tours throughout the world-renowned Margaret River region –
West Winds Distillers
Established in 2010, West Winds is an award-winning distillery and tavern in Cowaramup, approximately 10 minutes south of Margaret River.
As self-proclaimed perfectionists, the team took an entire year and 45 distillations to create their first two gins – The Sabre and Cutlass. This dedication to perfection certainly paid off, as The Cutlass was the first Australian spirit to win a Double Gold. The Sabre followed this up with a gold at “The World’s Most Recognised Spirit Competition” in San Francisco. They currently have a selection of 10 unique flavours to choose from, which are made using local botanicals.
At West Winds, you’ll go on a sensory adventure and discover the range of Australian botanicals and flavours that set their spirits apart. The new Tavern is the place for great food, refreshing gin and cocktails, and a carefully selected range of local WA beer and wine. West Winds is definitely worth a stop off on your gin tours throughout Margaret River.
Ginversity (Margaret River Distilling Company)
Margaret River Distilling Company is the producer of Giniversity Gin and home of Limeburners Whisky. This world-class distillery is located just outside Margaret River town, amongst the native Peppermint trees.
Boasting an extensive collection of awards, Ginversity is produced using native botanicals that provide a distinctly local flavour. From eucalypt to lemon myrtle, boronia, and emu plum, they even produced Australia’s first hemp gin from Margaret River hemp seed.
If you’re looking for a relaxed place to taste some amazing gin, delicious food, local beers and wine, make sure you include Margaret River Distilling Company as a venue on your distillery tours.
The Grove Distillery & Brewery
As the first distillery established in the Margaret River region, The Grove Distillery & Brewery is located in Wilyabrup, approximately 20 minutes north of Margaret River.
At this cellar door, you’ll be treated to some amazing spirits produced in small batches from a combination of local botanicals and triple-filtered rainwater, then aged in custom-built barrels.
If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind educational experience, you can even book a “Talk & Taste” with head distiller James Reed. James has dedicated his life to craft spirits and will share his philosophy towards making some of Margaret River’s most award-winning spirits. These sessions are limited to 10 guests and are only available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 11 am and 130 pm.
The Grove is another venue that we highly recommend on your gin tours while in Margaret River.
Wineries & Breweries in Margaret River That Also Produce Gin
Stopping at one or two wineries or breweries that also produce gin on your distillery tour can be a great way to entertain a diverse group. Here are some of the current wineries and breweries within the Margaret River region that also produce gin –
Wise Wine is located in the spectacular setting of Eagle Bay and claims to be the only winery within the Margaret Region with ocean views. With a small run distillery on-site, they produce a range of spirits to complement their wine, with a current selection of 8 different flavoured gins.
Black Brewing Co.
Known for its stunning lakefront setting and entrance, Black Brewing Co. is also located in Wilyabrup, on Caves Road. Primarily a brewery and restaurant, they also produce a small range of gin branded as Dune Distilling Co. Gin paddles are available from the tasting room, and the cellar door personnel offer a unique spirit-tasting experience.

“If you want a chilled yet gratifying day around Margaret river , you NEED to book with these guys . We had such an enjoyable time. It was such an easy process from the very beginning . Jye is excellent, we enjoyed his company and knowledge about wine and the region. One of the best tour operators we have come across. Thanks for such a fun day Jye! We LOVEd it.”
“We did a tour with Jye in June 2022 and it was fantastic. Four of us travelled from Canberra for a multi day trip and we loved that Jye appreciated our pre-existing knowledge and was able to adapt to our preferences, all while giving helpful insights into the region. In particular, his lunch suggestion was perfect! Jye easily accommodated us despite booking only 1 or 2 days in advance! Would recommend to everyone, Jye could easily fill a day for you if you want or he can add to an already high knowledge base.”
“Jye is hands down the best wine/brewery/distillery tour guide you could ever have. The entire process was just so easy from booking, planning and during the tour. He made sure our entire eclectic group was enjoying themselves. We will definitely be back again!”
